Operating behind the scenes, writers can feel like wallflowers. Our voice is quietly heard by a select few as we witness what appears to be a windfall of published work by other authors. What is it they have that I do not? Perhaps a great following on social media, the influence of a podcast, or a signed contract with an agent would make my words fruitful and multiply?

What is culturally popular can be based on public opinion, yet as Christians we are called to obey God’s purpose for our lives. When popularity becomes our measure of success, we risk losing sight of our mission. Like a wallflower standing just outside the spotlight, we may feel unseen, but God often accomplishes His grand design through those who dependably serve in the background.

This is exactly where we meet David in the Book of 1 Samuel. While we are aware of his secret anointing by the prophet Samuel, his road to kingship is impacted by the intentional actions of those who appear on the sidelines. Though forced into hiding by King Saul, David’s story is shaped by faithful people who quietly advance God’s plan.
